Duck and Take Cover

Here is the life cycle of our Take Cover journals:

First, we cut the covers off of an old book. Don’t worry—it is painless and we promise they don’t feel a thing. We save the book “guts” for use in other projects. They become pages in the Scrap Journals, covers for the Scrap Journals, are shredded for packing material and show up in various and sundry other unexpected places.

We trim the covers on a seriously heavy-duty cutter for a clean, crisp edge.

We make the text blocks (inside pages) from a creamy white 70# text weight paper (what this means to you is that it is a nice, thick sheet.)

We line the inside covers with beautiful endpapers. Or sometimes we leave the library card, pencil marks and doodles of the person the book once belonged to.

Finally, we ring-bind the journal together. This is a nice and versatile binding: if you want to add special mementos (or tear out a page you wrote in a fit of embarrassing self-pity) you can. Who will know but you?

We hope you like them.

Dressing Up

We all know half the allure of a blog or website is the pretty pictures. I’ll admit it—that’s what I want to see. So we always try to provide some eye candy to go along with our storytelling. Turning a good picture into a great picture can sometimes be as simple as a few well-placed props. Maybe something as small as a splash of color can be just the ticket. More than once we have scratched our heads hunting around for a piece of material for a backdrop and come up empty. One day we were at a loss for a piece of red cloth, and as our studio is located in Sharon’s home, I asked her if she had a red dress. Of course she did. A very cute one that was perfect for the shot. Since then we have used several articles of clothing to set off our books. So when in need of that perfect color or textured background, don’t forget to check out your closet for any of your old party dresses.

Happy Birthday, Kim!

It's been a fun week. Yesterday was the Fourth of July. Sharon and her husband, Mike, threw a well-attended backyard bbq. It was great to catch up with old friends. And Sharon's sister-in-law, Kim, who comes in and works with us every week, had a birthday July 1, so we decided to walk over to our local coffeehouse and suprise her with some birthday treats. We rarely pass up an opportunity to eat pastry!
